Primrose Dementia Unit Reaches Final of Scottish Care Awards

Hillview Court care home, in Clackmannanshire, has reached the final three in the Scottish Care Award’s Dementia Specialist category, for its Primrose Unit that caters specifically for those with dementia.

The winner will be announced at a special ceremony held on 20th November, where Scotland’s care homes will come together to recognise and celebrate the achievements of those who work in the care sector.

There are 13 award categories and the nominations in each category have been whittled down to a final three, with the winner to be announced on the night. Over 600 people are expected to attend the ceremony, which will be hosted by TV personality and former Loose Women host Kaye Adams and held at the Hilton hotel in Glasgow.

The Primrose Unit at Hill View Court hopes to impress the judges with their person-centred approach to dementia care. They organise a huge variety of stimulating activities for residents, including a recent holiday to Ayr, a seaside town near Kilmarnock, and a trip to Stirling’s safari park. They also encourage residents to get involved with everyday activities such as cooking cakes and casseroles, or going shopping to get their toiletries.

Care Home Manager Tanya Taylor-Smith said: “We are all so pleased to have reached the final stage of this award – I am like the cat that’s got the cream! Everyone at the Primrose Unit, and throughout Hillview Court, works incredibly hard and so it is great to have this recognised. It will be the first time I have attended this event as a finalist and so I am very excited. Whatever the result, we are proud to have got this far and be acknowledged as one of Scotland’s top suppliers of dementia care.”

Activities Co-ordinator Kirsten McColl added: “At the Primrose Unit we choose to focus on the person, not the dementia, so structure care programmes around the individual. We like to keep residents as active as possible and so there is always lots going on! There is a real homely, comfortable feel at the unit which makes residents feel relaxed and secure. We pride ourselves on providing superior care for our residents in settings that feel like their own home.”
