Whirlpool Corporation wins top energy award

The Whirlpool Corporation, the world’s leading home appliance manufacturer, has been awarded a top energy award by the American government granting them more than any other appliance manufacturer.

The 2010 Energy Star Sustained Excellence award from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognises Whirlpool’s continued leadership in offering consumers energy and water efficiency through its leading home appliances. This is the company’s 11th top Energy Star award, and fifth consecutive Sustained Excellence win, bringing their total to 22.

According to a Whirlpool survey conducted last year, the energy efficiency of an appliance is more important than ever when consumers are shopping for major appliances.  The majority of US consumers (59 per cent) said they would rather spend more money now, to save money and energy later, when it comes to home appliances.

Last year, Whirlpool made a commitment to make all the electronically controlled appliances it manufactures capable of receiving, and reacting to, signals from smart grids by 2015. This will allow its appliances to choose the lowest priced energy available at the time, saving consumers money, and will reduce peak time demand.

Gina McCarthy, EPA Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation, says: “EPA is recognising Whirlpool with our highest Energy Star award – the 2010 Sustained Excellence award. Whirlpool’s continued leadership and commitment to energy efficiency is a testament to what we can accomplish to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect our environment.”

Commenting on the company’s 22nd Energy Star award, Tom Catania, vice-president of Government Relations at Whirlpool, adds: “ We are helping the US government identify ways to provide new ways to conserve our natural resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including helping to create unifying standards for the smart electricity grid.”

Ian Railton, Managing Director of Whirlpool in the UK, is delighted the company’s massive investment in green innovations has been recognised. Mr Railton comments: “Consumers are increasingly aware of the environment, and this year heralds the introduction of the company’s Green Generation range of appliances to the UK, making it easier for consumers to make green choices.”
