kbbreview Industry Awards use unique judging process to determine winners

Industry experts from the kitchen and bathroom sectors were selected to be part of a unique judging process and to ultimately decide on the winning entries for the 2010 kbbreview Industry Awards.

The short-listed finalists from the design categories were invited to the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) headquarters in London on Thursday 14th January 2010 to present their designs to the judging panel in person and answer their questions.

The judges have also visited the short-listed finalists from the business categories in their showrooms so that they can see how they operate for themselves.

Andrew Davies, Editor, kbbreview magazine, chaired the judging panel for those short-listed in the kitchen categories, which included:

  • Scott Lawrence, Managing Director, Scott Lawrence Design
  • Neil Lerner, Managing Director, Neil Lerner Kitchens
  • Renée Mascari, Chief Executive, NTG
  • Andrew Randall, Director, Tsunami UK

Tim Wallace, Deputy Editor, kbbreview magazine, chaired the judging panel for those short-listed in the bathroom categories, which included:

  • Ruth Bell, Deputy Editor, Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms
  • René Dekker, Head of Interior Design, SHH Architects
  • Jane Gilchriest, Senior Design Consultant, Colourwash
  • Robin Levien, Product Designer, Studio Levien

Andrew Davies commented: “The judging process for the kbbreview Industry Awards is unique in the kitchen and bathroom sectors. We believe that judging from submitted entries alone does not give a true picture of a design or a business. By meeting the designers in person, the judges were able to step into their mindset to see how they have executed the brief to clarify the process and to bring the design to life. Also by visiting the showrooms, the judges were able to gain a better understanding of how the businesses operate on a day-to-day basis.

“The judges were not specifically looking for entries with the biggest turnover, showroom or highest budget for a design, but how well available resources had been used. Likewise in design, the main criteria was how well the client’s brief had been met and whether the budget was spent wisely – whatever that budget was.

“I would like to congratulate all the finalists – it is a huge achievement to get this far and they should all be very proud of themselves and their businesses.”

Now in its 16th year, the prestigious annual awards are the pinnacle of the industry, acknowledging the best in room design, product innovation and business practice within the kitchen and bathroom industry in the UK.

The winners will be announced at the gala awards evening on Monday 22nd March at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole hotel. To book your seat at the awards, either book online at www.kbbreview.com or call Anna Liddle on 0208 515 2113.
