Residents egg-cited about new arrivals

Residents at Mount Pleasant care home, on the outskirts of Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire, will be welcoming some fluffy new arrivals to the home over the next two weeks.

The residents at the purpose-built care home, which is part of the Caring Homes group, have taken delivery of a collection of chicken eggs as part of the Living Eggs scheme and are now waiting ‘egg-citedly’ for them to hatch.

After the eggs have hatched, the residents at Mount Pleasant will be able to look after them for two weeks and watch them grow, before they are re-housed. A class of schoolchildren, from Winshill Village Primary School in Burton-on-Trent, will also visit Mount Pleasant on 1st April to meet the residents and their chicks.

Anne-Marie Robinson, the manager at Mount Pleasant, says: “We are always looking for new things for our residents to do and the Living Eggs scheme seemed like the perfect way to have some fun this Easter.

“Many of the residents can remember keeping chickens themselves so this will bring back happy memories of their childhood as well as help them interact with local youngsters. We are particularly looking forward to the visit from the schoolchildren, and hope they will enjoy their end of term treat of visiting us and the chicks!

“The staff at Mount Pleasant pride themselves on making the home an enjoyable place to live and the Living Eggs scheme is just part of our overall mission to provide the best possible care for all our residents.”

Editors’ notes

Mount Pleasant is a modern, purpose-built home catering for up to 50 residents aged over 60 in Winshill, on the outskirts of Burton-upon-Trent. The home is close to the town and has strong links with the local community. All the rooms are en suite and there is a hairdressing salon on site. The home’s team of qualified and dedicated staff offer 24-hour nursing care and pride themselves on making Mount Pleasant a home from home.

The Living Eggs scheme started in 1995 in Australia. The eggs are provided two to three days away from hatching and a hatching box with a viewing lid is provided. The chickens stay for two weeks before they are found good homes, or kept where they hatched.
