Shaun Barrett, President of retra, the independent radio, electrical and television retailers’ association, is training hard for his attempt to row across the Channel in aid of charity.
Shaun is a member of the crew of a four-man scull who will take to the water 24th-26th May, weather permitting, in aid of the Anthony Nolan Trust. The Trust is an independent charity which helps people with leukaemia find lifesaving donors. Every year thousands of people with leukaemia and aplastic anaemia need a blood stem cell transplant from a donor who shares the same tissue type, the Anthony Nolan Trust register of donors helps them find to that person.
The crew has been training hard for the challenge, rowing in Dover harbour once to twice a week since February. The Channel is the world’s busiest shipping route so the crew will have to keep their eyes peeled for passing ships as well as worrying about the size of the waves and their fitness.
This is the second time Shaun has rowed the Channel and this time he hopes to raise £1,500 for the Trust. He says: “I feel very proud to be able to support such a worthwhile charity. I did this two years ago and hope to be successful again. This time we will be in a smaller boat which could capsize if the waves get too big!
“It would be fantastic if as many people as possible could sponsor me, every little helps and I would be truly grateful.”
