True Silence is Officially Impossible to Find

A national survey, commissioned for National Quiet Day, has found that 43 per cent of the UK population believe that in the modern world we live in, true silence is impossible to find.

One in 10 people blame their partner for making the most annoying noises they have to tolerate on a daily basis, whereas only one in 20 accuse their children.

Woodlands, the allotment and the beach have been revealed as Britain’s favourite outdoor spaces to get away from the intruding noises of everyday life, with men more likely to take shelter from annoying noises in the garden shed.

National Quiet Day, which will take place on Thursday, 14th September, highlights the importance for people to find a little more peace and quiet, encouraging them to take a moment away from the commotion of daily life.

Home appliance manufacturer Whirlpool commissioned the national survey of 2,000 adults which highlighted the problem of noise in UK households. The study underlined the everyday noises that affect people the most.

A spinning washing machine topped the list of annoying home appliances, with the dishwasher, microwave and extractor fan following closely behind.

A spokesperson from Whirlpool said: “Noise irritation is one of the biggest bugbears of modern life, and incredibly the majority happen within our own homes, and it’s something that can arise at any time.

“But protecting yourself from loud sounds in the home, and making sure you have a quiet haven to escape to when the noise gets too much, can really help, and that’s why we are promoting National Quiet Day on Thursday, 14th September.”

“The trend for open plan living has its many advantages, but it can be problematic when noisy appliances are situated in the same room where the family eats, works, entertains and relaxes.

“Traditionally, washing machines have been responsible for much of the noise in the home, but Whirlpool is dedicated to improving people’s everyday lives, and has therefore invested heavily in noise reduction technology.

“The innovative ZEN Technology, in the Supreme Care range of washing machines, offers the quietest spin cycle on the market1, meaning people can get on with life, undisturbed by the sound of their washing machine.”
